Palki Malhotra on Making History with Campus Beats, the Only Indian Series to Reach Five Seasons: “It Felt Like Dil Mill Gayye and Dil Dosti Dance All Over Again”

In an era where shows and films often struggle to leave a lasting impression, Campus Beats has become a rare success story. Helmed by renowned creator Palki Malhotra, the series has not only captured hearts but has made history by becoming the only Indian web series to reach five seasons. The fifth season premiered on April 10 on Amazon MX Player (formerly Amazon miniTV), marking a milestone moment in the Indian OTT space.

Starring Shantanu Maheshwari, Shruti Sinha, Tanvi Gadkari, Sahaj Singh Chahal, and a dynamic young cast, Campus Beats blends dance, drama, romance, and raw emotion into a vibrant youth-centric narrative. Produced by Banijay Asia, the series has struck a chord particularly with Gen Z and millennials, building a fiercely loyal fanbase.  In a day and age where all OTT platforms are all aiming for the youth, Campus Beats seems to have garnered the right fan base and eyeballs amidst an audience which is not easy to capture at all.

Palki Malhotra, the creative force behind youth classics like Dil Dosti Dance, Dill Mill Gayye, and MTV Girls on Top, shared her emotional journey in an exclusive note.

“When we launched Campus Beats, we had no idea we’d make it to five seasons,” Palki revealed. “Honestly, I just wanted to relive that feeling, the kind of love we once received during Dill Mill Gayye and Dil Dosti Dance. And when Season 1 dropped, I instantly saw the same kind of passion and response. It felt nostalgic, and that’s when I knew we were onto something special.”

Reflecting on the current entertainment landscape, she added, “It’s overwhelming not just for me but for everyone involved. This isn’t just a show reaching five seasons; it’s a youth series doing that. Just two or three years ago, I was frustrated because there were hardly any youth-centric Indian shows. Everyone seemed to be leaning into Korean dramas. I really wanted to create something homegrown, something for our own youth. That’s why this milestone is even more special.”

Palki credits the show’s success to a combination of things, dedication of the team, the writers, directors, choreographers, editors, costume designers, actors, the DOP, the platform, and the sheer love from fans. She shared, “The journey has been beautiful but not easy. This show was made with immense passion, hard work, and sincerity. It involved extra sweat, extra blood with injuries, and countless hours of rehearsals where everyone gave it their all. Not for any remuneration but only for their passion, celebrating every moment of hard work.”

With five seasons under its belt and a community of devoted viewers, Campus Beats has become more than a show, it’s a movement, a memory, and a moment in Indian web history.
