“What Kind of Benchmark Are We Setting?” – Manas Shah on  Slams Ranveer Allahbadia’s Controversy on show India’s got latent

Actor Manas Shah, known for his roles in Yeh Hai Chahatein and Tulsi – Hamari Badi Sayani, has spoken out against the rising trend of vulgarity in comedy and entertainment. His comments come in light of the recent controversy surrounding YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, who posed an extremely inappropriate question on the show India’s got latent. The question, which was both disturbing and unexpected, has led to backlash, with many questioning the kind of content being promoted in the name of entertainment.

He strongly believes in cultural values and dignity, expressing his disappointment with the way humor is being portrayed today. He shared his views, stating, “Honestly, I am someone who values culture and traditions a lot. I believe in maintaining dignity and respect in everything, including entertainment. That’s why I don’t watch stand-up comedy shows or web series where vulgar language and excessive abuse are used just to create fun. I feel such content affects my psychology, shifting my mindset from optimistic to pessimistic, which I do not want.”

India is known for its diverse culture and traditions, but Shah feels that modernity should not come at the cost of decency. He pointed out that people often use abusive language when they are unable to express themselves properly, which is why they resort to such shortcuts even in comedy. He said, “I believe that people often resort to abusive language when they run out of words or feel powerless in an argument. Similarly, using vulgar or humiliating language in comedy just to make people laugh is not creativity—it’s simply an easy way out.”

Speaking about the growing trend of offensive humor in stand-up comedy and shows, Manas Shah shared his concern. He said, “These days, I see statements about certain stand-up comedy shows, but I haven’t personally watched them because such content doesn’t interest me. I don’t understand how people—especially the younger generation—find it amusing when someone crosses all boundaries just to be ‘cool’ or ‘modern.’ Where are we heading with this? It’s concerning.”

He believes that true talent lies in creating clean comedy that people of all ages can enjoy without discomfort. “For me, it’s completely wrong to use offensive language to create humor, even if people are laughing at it. If you truly have talent, then prove it through clean comedy. Many great artists have done that successfully without using cheap tricks,” he said.

He also made it clear that he would never be comfortable participating in a show where humor is based on insulting others. “I completely oppose such shows. If I were ever invited to one, I wouldn’t even understand how to be a part of it. Roasting, in the name of humor, should never mean humiliating someone. I can’t understand why people enjoy this kind of content,” he stated.

He urged people to reflect on the kind of entertainment they are consuming and promoting ,“We need to ask ourselves: what kind of benchmark are we setting? Would we be okay if someone made similar comments about our own family members or loved ones? It’s something to think about,” he said.

While he acknowledges that entertainment should not always be restricted to traditional or family-friendly content, Manas Shah believes there should still be a basic level of decency. “I’m not saying that every show should be made keeping elders or traditional values in mind. But there should be some level of decency. It’s very easy to insult someone and make fun of them, but is that real comedy? I don’t think so, and I definitely don’t support such content.”
